Mercury (formerly Mercury Interactive Corporation) is a former Israeli company that has been acquired by the HP Software Division. Mercury offered software for application management, application delivery, change and configuration management, service-oriented architecture, change request, quality assurance, and IT governance.

History[edit]

In 1989, Amnon Landan and Arye Finegold founded Mercury Interactive Corporation.[1] The company was based in California and had offices located around the world. It also had a large R&D facility in Yehud, Israel.[2]

On 25 July 2006, Hewlett-Packard announced that it would pay approximately $4.5 billion to acquire Mercury Interactive, offering to pay $52 a share.[3]

On 7 November 2006, Mercury Interactive formally became part of HP.[4] The Mercury Interactive products are now sold by HP Software Division.[5]

Mercury Interactive legacy products were integrated and sold as part of the HP IT Management Software portfolio from the HP Software Division.[6]

Most of the Mercury Interactive software assets were apportioned to Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) when HP split into two companies. In September 2017, HPE completed the sale of most of its software assets, including the legacy Mercury Interactive products to UK-based Micro Focus.

Acquisitions[edit]

From 2000 until its HP acquisition in 2006, Mercury purchased several software companies:

  • Conduct Software Technologies, Inc., acquired by Mercury Interactive in a share-swap deal worth about $50M, was a privately held software company founded in 1996 by Sharon Azulai, David Barzilai, and Ran Levy. The company provided network topology visualization products, to pinpoint bottlenecks and isolate the location of network problems both across the network and across the system infrastructure. Its main product was SiteRunner, which used multi-agent technology to pinpoint bottlenecks. As part of Mercury, Conduct alumni started a new project, nicknamed Falcon and later called Prism, that switched focus to monitoring web server traffic.[7]
  • Freshwater Software was a software vendor of a web server monitoring and administration tool called SiteScope.[8] Mercury Interactive acquired Freshwater Software in 2001.[9] The product is now called HP SiteScope software.
  • Performant Inc. was a software vendor of J2EE diagnostic tools. Mercury Interactive acquired Performant in 2003 for $22.5M.[10]
  • Kintana Inc. was a software vendor of IT governance products. Mercury Interactive acquired Kintana in June 2003 for $225M.[11] Kintana products are now called HP Project and Portfolio Management software.
  • Appilog was a software vendor of auto-discovery and application mapping software. Appilog products mapped the relationships among applications and their underlying infrastructure.[12] Mercury Interactive acquired Appilog for $49M in 2004.[13] Appilog products are now part of HP Universal CMDB software, an HP Business Service Management offering.
  • BeatBox Technologies (formerly named 'ClickCadence LLC') was a software vendor of real user behavior tracking products. Mercury Interactive acquired BeatBox in 2005 for approximately $14 million in cash, 'to extend the real user monitoring capabilities of its BTO software and to enhance its performance lifecycle offerings.'.[14] BeatBox was incorporated into Mercury's Real User Monitor (RUM) product, which is now part of HP Business Availability Center.
  • Systinet (formerly named IdooX) was a software vendor of registry and enablement products for standard service-oriented architecture (SOA). Mercury Interactive acquired Systinet in 2006 for $105M.[15] Systinet products are now called HP SOA Systinet software.

Corporate malfeasance[edit]

From 4 January 2006 until its acquisition by Hewlett-Packard, Mercury Interactive was traded via the Pink Sheets as a result of being delisted from the NASDAQ due to noncompliance with filing requirements.[16] On 3 January 2006, Mercury missed a second deadline for restating its financials, leading to the delisting.

Chief Executive Officer Amnon Landan, Chief Financial Officer Douglas Smith, and General Counsel Susan Skaer resigned in November 2005 after a special committee at the company found that they benefited from a program to favorably price option grants. The committee found that, beginning in 1995, there were 49 instances in which the stated date of a stock option grant was different from the date on which the option appeared to have been granted. In almost every case, the price on the actual date was higher than the price on the stated grant date.[17] A former Chief Financial Officer, Sharlene Abrams, later associated with the financial misreporting, had resigned previously in November 2001.[18]

The Chief Executive Officer, Amnon Landan, also was found to have misreported personal stock option exercise dates to increase his profit on transactions three times between 1998 and 2001. In addition, a $1 million loan to Mr. Landan in 1999—which was repaid—did not appear to have been approved in advance by the Board of Directors and was referred to in some of the company's public filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, but was not clearly disclosed.[19] In 2007, the SEC filed civil fraud charges against Landan, Smith, Skaer and Abrams. Without admitting or denying the SEC's allegations, Mercury Interactive agreed to pay a $28 million civil penalty to settle the Commission's charges in 2007.[20]

The SEC settled charges against Sharlene Abrams in March 2009. Abrams agreed to pay $2,287,914 in disgorgement, of which $1,498,822 represented the 'in-the-money' benefit from her exercise of backdated option grants, and a $425,000 civil penalty.[21] In September 2009, a federal judge dismissed all charges brought by the SEC against Susan Skaer, who now goes by the name Susan Skaer Tanner.[22]

Q: After creating the test cases in excel and exported to TD. How does test director know the headings?
Toexport the test cases from spreadsheet to TD there are 8 steps. In 6thstep we need to map the Td fields with corresponding Spreadsheetcolumns. Hence you are the mapping so you can map according to yourspecifications.
Q: How to use TestDirect like a Dashboard?
Thenew version of TD (TestDirector for Quality Center) should provide youwith that. If you not want to upgrade, you have to design your own'start page', include the apps and bits you want to display, and usecode to extract data from TD.
Q: Can you retrieve a test case once you have deleted them in Test Director?
InQuality Center, if you delete entire folder with tests, the tests getstored in Unattached folder. But if you just deleted 'individual'tests, they are GONE! and can't be retrieved. Not sure if Test Directorhas the same behaviour/functionality.
There are 2 options in QC. oneis remove and another is delete. the diffrence is that .once it isremove it is removed from test set but avail in QC directory. If it isdeleted, you can't retrive. If you press delete that will delete fromthat QC directory also.
Q: How do we import testcases written in Excel to Test Director
Use Mecury Interactive Microsoft Excel Add-in for importing test cases written in excel sheet.
It is available on Add-ins page.
Select the rows in excel which you want to upload to TD
Then select export to TD option under tools menu

Testdirector is a test mangement tool, it is used across all majororganizations and is generally used for management of all testactivities in organization.
It is important to learn this tool, butfor beginners it is enough to understand how to log defects into it andhow to run tests using it.

To connect to TD from QTP follow the steps..

If you want to reconnect on startup check the reconnect on startup and save password for reconnection on startup.

Foreach and every phase we can get reports, like for requirements, testcases, and test run. There are some types of reports also availablelike report summary, progress report and requirements coverage report.
Eachand every test director client tool consists of a menu bar Analysis. Byusing this menu you can crate reports in table format. You can generategraphs. All graphs options in maths are supported. And you can createvarious types of charts too.
Q: TD (Quality Center 9.0) how can you run automated test cases?
Whiledesigning your test steps in QC for automation tests in test planmodule, Test Script tab is availble. You can generate script here orcopy from your automatioon tool. While running your tests, it will askfor on which host you want to run. You need to select the system inyour network. Then run it. Before going to run your script in a system,the automation tool, like WinRunner, must be installed on that system.Otherwise you will get an error.
Q: Can we add user defined fields to Test Director?
Yes. We can add the user defined fields using TD 8.0, But you need to have admin priviliges to this.
Q: How do we attach Excel sheet with test director?
This function is for getting datatable(excel sheet) in test director.
Try to use it and as vbs file and call this function to get ur datatable.

TestLab can be used to create a test set. You can add one or many testcases into a test set. Then run all test cases in a test set togetherand change the status as pass/fail.
Q: Can we map the Defects directly to the requirements (not thru the test cases) in the Test Director?

Create the test case structure and the test cases
Map the testcases to the apr. req.
Run and report bugs from your test cases in the test lab module.
Thedatabase structure in TD is mapping testcase to defects, only if youhave created the bug from the apr. test case. Maybe you can update themapping by using some code in the bug script module (from the customizeproject funktion), as fare as I know, its not possible to map defectsdirectly to an req.
Q: How do I run reports from Test Director?
This is how you do it:
1. Open the test director project.
2. Display the requirements module.
3. Chose report
Analysis > Reports > Standard Requirements Report.
Q: Can we export the files from Test director to Excel Sheet? If yes then how?
Design tab -- Right click -> go to save as -> select excel and save it

Q: Can we upload test cases from an excel sheet into Test Director?
Yes,you can do that. Go to Add In menu in TestDirector, find the Excel addin, and install it in you machine. Now open excel, you can find the newmenu option export to Test director. Rest of the procedure is selfexplanatory
Q: How can we map a single defect to two testscripts? Is there a way in test director so that we can state thatdefect defect X is same for test script A and test script B?
No way.When you run a script, you find and generate a defect report. In otherwords, every defect report is unique to a single test script.
Q:How can we create our own Defect Template from Test Director? Is itpossible in Test Director? If possible how we can Create our OwnTemplate?
You can not create your own template for defect reporting in Test Director but you can customize the Template in Test Director
Q: How can we export multiple test cases from TD in a single go?
Openany test and click on the tab 'design step'. Once it opens, you canright click on the first cell and export into any format .
Q: How to customize the reports generated?
Thisdepends a lot of what you are interested in 'reporting on'. You have tocombine both SQL and VB script to extract data from TD to Excel.
Itsalso possible to 'customize' the standard reports given from the'analyze' tab, this is written in XML if you are familiar with thislanguage.
If you log in to Mercury support you will be able to find a lot of code examples.
Q: How many tabs in TestDirector and explain them?
there are 4 tabs available in Testdirector.
1. Requirement -> to track the customer requirenments
2. Testplan -> to design the testcases & to store the testscripts

Q: How to map requirements with testcases in TestDirector?
1. In requirements TAB select coverage view.
2. Select requirement by clicking on Parent/Child or grand Child.
3.On right hand side (in Coverage View Window) another window willappear. It has two TABS (a) Tests Coverage (b) Details. Test CoverageTAB will be selected by default or you click it.
4. Click on SelectTests Button. A new window will appear on right hand side and you willsee a list of all tests. You can select any test case you want to mapwith you requirement.
Q: How to use TestDirector in real time projects?
Once completed the preparing of the test cases.
1. Export the test cases in to Test Director. ( it will contain total 8 steps).
2. The test cases will be loaded in the Test Plan module.
3. Once the execution is started, we move the test cases from Test Plan tab to the Test Lab module.
4.In Test Lab, we execute the test cases and put as pass or fail orincomplete. We generate the graphs in the test lab for daily report andsent to the onsite (where ever you want to deliver).
5. If you gotany defects and raise the defect in the defect module. When raising thedefect ,attach the defect with the screen shot.
Q: How can we add requirements to test cases in Test Director?
You can add requirements to test cases in two ways; either from Requriements tab or Test Plan tab.
Navigateto the appropriate Requirement and right click, you can find the menuto map the test case and the vice versa is available in Test plan tab.
Q: What does Test Grid contains ?
The Test Grid displays all the tests in a TestDirector project.
The Test Grid contains the following key elements:
Test Grid toolbar, with buttons of commands commonly used when creating and modifying the Test Grid.
Grid filter, displaying the filter that is currently applied to a column.
Description tab, displaying a description of the selected test in the Test Grid.
Historytab, displaying the changes made to a test. For each change, the griddisplays the field name, date of the change, name of the person whomade the change, and the new value.
