For context, that's already more than double Janelle Monáe's popular videos for 'Make Me Feel' and 'PYNK' -- combined. It also surpasses Jay-Z's 2018 music video -- featuring Beyoncé -- 'Family Feud' (13 million views) and Kanye West's controversial 2016 music video for 'Famous' (32 million views).

The video's success follows Donald Glover's appearance as both musical guest and host of Saturday Night Live, on which he closed the show with a performance of 'This Is America.'

A multi-talented artist, Glover got his start as a writer for the NBC sitcom 30 Rock, before taking on the role of Troy Barnes in Community. Under his musical pseudonym Childish Gambino, he was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammys for 'Awaken, My Love,' which featured the hit single, 'Redbone.' He has also received widespread acclaim for his Emmy-winning television series for FX, Atlanta, which he both stars in and occasionally directs. Glover is set to play Lando Calrissian in the the forthcoming film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. In 2017, Time named Glover to its annual '100 Most Influential People in the World.'

For 'This Is America,' Glover teamed up with director Hiro Murai, who also directs Atlanta. Critics have praised the video as one of the most compelling pieces of art of the Trump era, weaving in razor-sharp commentary on gun violence, race, and entertainment. Vanity Fair described it as a 'stylish, ambitious provocation'; The Undefeated called it 'a beautiful nightmare'; The Atlantic describes it as 'the most talked-about music video of recent memory.'

'This Is America' currently sits at No. 1 on YouTube's trending list. Still, it has about 5 billion views to go to catch 2017's most-watched music video, 'Despacito' by Luis Fonsi (featuring Daddy Yankee).
